I received this commission for the Press and Magazine Illustration class in my Master's program in Editorial and Advertising Illustration. The task was to create a cover for The New Yorker, with a theme of my choice but related to New York City.
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the birth of Hip Hop in New York in 1973, I pay tribute to this culture, which is an undeniable part of the city's identity. To do so, I reinterpret the cover of "Hip Hop Files," a book by photographer Martha Cooper. This book contains many of the photos she captured during the early days of graffiti's emergence and has become an icon of the Hip Hop culture.
My proposal involves representing the passage of these 50 years on the teenager featured in Cooper's original cover photo.
